Certifying that he has sold "the balance of the Atlantic Telegraph Cable now on board the U.S.S. Niagra" to Tiffany & Co.; stating that "a genuine section" of the cable accompanies this note. The "genuine section" of cable may be the one in the cover binding of MA 139, a related collection.

Tiffany and Company was was founded in 1837 by the jeweler Charles Lewis Tiffany. It started as a stationary and fine goods store and named "Tiffany, Young and Ellis" for its three founders. It changed its name in 1853 when Charles Tiffany took control and established the firm's emphasis on jewelry. Cyrus West Field (1819-1892) was a merchant and capitalist who promoted the laying of the first Atlantic cable linking the U.S. with Europe. He formed a company to build cable communications between Newfoundland and Ireland, helped establish elevated trains in New York City, and participated in the development of the Wabash Railroad.
